Visitors planning their first Oktoberfest trip often have the same questions about reservations, payments and entry rules.

This FAQ answers many of the most common questions.

Do I Need a Reservation?

No. Many tents keep around a quarter of seats for walk-in guests (except a few such as Käfer Wiesn-Schänke). You have the best chance in the morning and early afternoon, especially on weekdays.

Reservations mainly guarantee seating during busy evening periods.

Are Children Allowed?

Yes, families are welcome at Oktoberfest. Many tents offer children’s menus (often until early evening). Tuesdays are “family day” with discounted rides and kids’ offers until 7 p.m.

Children under 6 are not allowed in beer tents after 8 p.m.; under-16s must be with a guardian after 8 p.m. on the grounds. Families often visit earlier in the day when it’s less crowded.

What Happens if I Arrive Late?

If you arrive significantly late, the tent may release your table to other guests.

Arriving early is strongly recommended.

Can I Pay by Card?

Payment rules vary by tent.

Many tents still prefer cash payments at the table.

What Do Reservation Time Terms Mean?

Common time labels include:

TermMeaning
MittagLunch session
NachmittagAfternoon session
AbendEvening session

Can I Share a Table with Strangers?

Yes. Oktoberfest tables are communal and it is common to sit next to other groups.

Is There a Dress Code?

Traditional Bavarian clothing such as dirndls and lederhosen is popular but not required.

What If I Cannot Get a Reservation?

Many visitors still enjoy Oktoberfest by arriving early (tents open 9–10 a.m.), trying multiple tents, and visiting on weekdays. Beer gardens don’t take table reservations, so they’re a good option in fine weather. From 2023, the official resale portal (oktoberfest-booking.com) lets you buy unused reservations at original prices from August/September.

Reservations help but are not essential for enjoying the festival.
